Rotas change, and public holidays or unforeseen events can alter them. If you need urgent help and cannot confirm who is on duty, call 112.

The complete calendar, day by day and slot by slot, is on our Spanish page: the names, addresses and times are the same, only the headings are in Spanish.

What a farmacia de guardia is

Pharmacies in Spain are not allowed to all close at the same time. Every town belongs to a pharmacy zone, and inside that zone the pharmacies take it in turns to stay open outside normal hours: at night, on Sundays and on public holidays. That is the farmacia de guardia, the duty chemist.

It is not voluntary. The rota is compulsory, drawn up in advance by the Colegio Oficial de Farmacéuticos, and it rotates between the four pharmacies of Pego. If a shutter is down at three in the morning it is because it is somebody else's turn, not because the town has been left without cover.

Always read the times, not just the name

On many days two pharmacies are on duty at once, covering different parts of the day. It is common for one to cover only the midday gap, roughly 2pm to 5pm, while another covers the full 24 hours or the night. Turning up at the right pharmacy at the wrong hour means a closed door, so read the times next to each name.

Times are shown on the 24-hour clock, as the rota is published. If you can, ring before you go: a phone call saves a wasted drive at night.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which pharmacy is on duty in Pego today?

The box at the top of this page shows today's duty pharmacy, its address and its times, using data from the Colegio Oficial de Farmacéuticos de Alicante.

Why are two pharmacies listed for the same day?

Because the day is split into slots: one pharmacy often covers the midday gap while another covers 24 hours or the night. Always read the time next to the name.

Can I collect a prescription at the pharmacy on duty?

Yes. Any pharmacy can dispense your electronic prescription; take the SIP health card of the person the medicine is for. Where Spanish law requires a prescription, the duty pharmacy cannot dispense without one either.

Is Farmacia Bueno the one on duty today?

Only when our turn comes round. This page shows whichever pharmacy is on duty. If today it is another one, go there: that is the pharmacy under an obligation to serve you.

What if I need urgent medical help, not a medicine?

A duty pharmacy dispenses medicines and gives pharmaceutical advice, but it is not an accident and emergency department. For a medical emergency call 112 or go to the health centre.
